How To Choose Your First Prom Dress

by Kenneth Cole Shoes on May 27, 2009

Thinking about your evening gown can never be started too early. It is one of the most important dresses you will own, just like your wedding dress. Your Prom night is a right of passage into adulthood and deserves all the attention you can give it. Stretch limos will be hired for the occasion by those that can afford it. Photographs will be taken, and kept for the rest of your life ( and possibly for your childrens also) so you want to look and feel) your very best. The very essence of your look is your best prom dress. Everything else, your shoes, your hairstyle, your makeup and your jewelry will be planned around your dress.

Before even looking at any evening gownes, look carefully and honestly at yourself. Are you one of the lucky ones who are perfectly proportioned, or like most of us either skinny or overweight? Are you top heavy or does your bust line leave a little to be desired? Are your legs long or short, and how do you rate your hips? All these factors should be taken into account when you choose your prom dress. One other thing. If you manage to select your prom dress more than a month before the event, don’t actually buy it. You want the prom dress designs to fit on the night, and you may well gain or lose weight.  All the above factors are still true if you decide to have a dress designed and made specially for you.

Once you have identified your good points and those things you wish to minimise, you need to decide on a style of dress. There are loads of places you can get advice about the best style to suit your particular figure. One thing that holds true no matter what you look like. Don’t get anything to tight. It emphasises any imperfactions and makes moving about less easy. You do want to be able to dance all night after all. Go try on a range of different styles and colors and take someone with you to help you make the final decision. Be careful who you choose to take with you. You need somebody who will be brutally honest. You need an honest opinion, so don’t tell them what you think you are looking for in advance.

You should decide on hairstyle and makeup, once you have committed to a dress. If you have long hair, you will have to make the decision about whether to put it on top of your head or leave it around your shoulders. An upswept hairstyle looks really good if you have a long slender neck, and good skin complexion. Also consider the neckline of your dress, hair left lose can look very cluttered with a fussy neckline. Think also about what your hair will do when you dance. You need a hairstlye that will survive the night long dancing. There are many hair ornaments which will help you to keep it under control. If you have short hair, you can always add extensions to your hair if you want to go for the long look or add a false piece set in curls on top of you head for something totally different.

Don’t get so caught up with the proper design and look of your gown prom dresses that you forget that the evening is about having  a wonderful time. The night is about you, whatever your evening gown looks like. If you feel happy and confident, it will show and you will look good. So go out, enjoy yourself.
