Ear Piercing And How It Has Changed

by Kenneth Cole Shoes on July 1, 2010

Remember when you could go to a store and sit on a box near the henckels knife set whilst a nice lady came at your head with a gun? If you think I’ve gone crazy then you would be wrong! What I am referring to of course is a child getting their ears pierced; this isn’t going to turn into a debate about the age some parents consent to piercing by the way.

Yeah it hurt and I remember it quite clearly. I also remember how hard they were to look after and its not because I didn’t try it was because this method of using guns is simply barbaric. Most piercers and their clients will agree that guns simply need to be banned.

You may wonder then why such big companies use guns and pass them off as safe. Well think of it like this, the gun is made of plastic so it can’t be sterilized, viruses like hepatitis and HIV can live on those guns that get a simple once over with a wet wipe. Secondly is the way the ear (or goodness forbid another body part) is pierced.

When a lobe or other part is pierced with a needle the piercer rarely has to use much force because the needle is so sharp that it causes very little trauma to the area. With ear piercing guns the blunt jewellery is fired at force through the lobe causing blunt force trauma and this is why many people especially young children end up in A&E needing treatment for infections, trauma and swelling where the butterfly back has ended up embedded in the ear. You may as well give your knife block set a try after all its about the same idea!

And yet parents will still take their children time and time again to these places as they don’t know otherwise, they will blame all other issues before looking at the horrible thing used to shove a piece of cheap jewellery into their kids ear and the resulting blunt force trauma involved.

How do you get around this then? No you don’t boil things in your countertop microwave and do it yourself from home. You can go into a proper piercing salon, they are not scary or full of bikers, they are clean and properly regulated and usually come with years and years of combined experience and a love of the art.

After all isn’t it better to be safer? We look after our bodies in so many ways our food, our sexual health so why skimp when it comes it putting a hole in your body?
